Radicalism

Freshbook MAGAZINE - Untitled Page (1).png

Almost any designer will tell you that flexing your creativity beyond the accepted bounds - and sometimes even beyond the practical - is not only healthy but necessary in staying fresh and pushing one's self into the fray . . . to the outer edges of imagination. And within those exercises come the unexpected, and in some cases, a new trend altogether. Both owners and builders are always waiting to see what new seaborne signature will grace the shows at Monaco and elsewhere - what new definitions will be set and built upon. Let's take a look at some of the most radical designs and imagine where they might take us in the coming years.

Earth 300 | Iddes Yachts | 300-metre

In April 2021, Iddes Yachts founder Ivan Salas Jefferson launched their concept for a 300-metre scientific exploration vessel, Earth300. The one hundred percent emission-free superyacht includes 22-state of-the-art laboratories and the radical design of a 13 story ‘Science Sphere’ with a cantilevered observation deck. The vessel has the capacity to accommodate 160 scientists, 20 resident experts, 40 VIP guests and 20 students, as well as 160 crew members.

This concept design scaled at 120 meters and while still considered radical - is more practical from the build perspective. It features six above the waterline decks, has its own swimming pools, a helipad on the foredeck and is traditionally powered with Lycombing turbines.

The entirely carbon-neutral 110 metre VY-01 was revealed by German studio 3deluxe and comes complete with a "garden-like" interior. The concept will be powered by fuel cells driven by hydrogen and recharged by bio-methanol alongside silent electric engines, for a range of 3,240 nautical miles. Described by the studio as "a floating garden of Eden", the interiors benefit from sensor-controlled louvers that wrap around the superstructure.
